How This Works

A free information line, and complete clarity about what it is

No account, no forms, no charge and no obligation. Here is exactly what we can help with, exactly what we cannot, and what happens if you ask to be connected to someone who can take a booking.

Railway Travel is an independent rail travel information service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Amtrak, VIA Rail or any railway operator. Disclaimer

Three Steps

What happens on the call

Most calls take a few minutes. Some take twenty, because someone is planning a two-week trip and wants to think out loud. Both are fine.

You describe the journey

Where you are hoping to go, roughly when, who is travelling and what you need to know. There is no form to fill in and nothing is recorded against your name.

We explain the options

Which services connect those cities, what the accommodation involves, what the accessibility arrangements are, how long it realistically takes and what to watch out for.

You decide what to do

Book directly with the carrier yourself — usually the simplest course — or ask to be connected to an independent travel provider who can handle a reservation. Entirely your choice.

The Boundaries

What we can and cannot do

We are an information service. That is a genuine limit, not modesty, and it is better that you know it before you pick up the phone than after.

We can explain how something works, what it includes and what your options are. We cannot transact.

  • We can explain routes, timetables, stations and journey times
  • We can describe what each class of travel includes
  • We can explain accessibility schemes and notice periods in both countries
  • We can help you work out who to contact about an existing booking
  • We cannot sell you a ticket or take a payment
  • We cannot see, change, cancel or refund any reservation
  • We cannot quote you a fare — we do not have access to pricing

Call Connections

If you ask to be connected

If you would like to proceed with a reservation, we can connect your call to an independent third-party travel provider. It is worth being precise about what that means.

That company is a separate business. It is not Railway Travel, we take no part in the conversation once the call is transferred, and any reservation you make is made directly with them under their own terms, their own pricing and their own fee structure. Any payment you make goes to them, not to us.

We may receive a referral commission in connection with a transferred call. There is no additional cost to you arising from that arrangement, and it does not constitute an endorsement of the company concerned.

Before you give anyone payment details

Ask them to identify their company and confirm, in full, any booking fee or service charge they intend to apply on top of the carrier fare. A reputable provider will tell you without hesitation. We have no visibility of what any third party charges.

No Catch

What the call costs

Nothing

The call is free from anywhere in the United States and we charge you nothing for speaking to us. There is no fee, no account and no minimum.

No payment details

We do not take payments, so we will never ask you for a card number. If anyone claiming to be us does, hang up and report it to us.

No obligation

Ask your question, get your answer and go and book directly with the carrier. That is a completely normal outcome and it is fine by us.

Questions

Questions about the process

Do I have to book anything?
No. A great many calls are simply questions — which route serves a city, what a roomette is like, how far ahead to arrange station assistance. You are under no obligation whatsoever, and there is no follow-up unless you ask for one.
Will you try to sell me something?
We cannot. We have nothing to sell. If you want to make a reservation we will either point you to the carrier or, if you ask, connect you to an independent provider who can take one.
Can I just book directly with the carrier instead?
Yes, and it is often the simplest thing to do. Every carrier we write about sells directly to the public. We will tell you that rather than talk you out of it.
What if I have already booked and something has gone wrong?
We cannot access or alter your booking. But call anyway — we can usually help you identify who issued the ticket and how to reach them, which is frequently the hard part.
Are calls recorded?
They may be recorded or monitored for training and quality purposes. Where that happens you are told at the start of the call and can ask that it not be recorded. Once a call is transferred to a third party, their practices apply.
